A unique piece of art for using and enjoying
Each cockerel mug is unique. Working from one of my photographs I paint the mugs in batches of about 6 so that there is consistency in the colours of the hares. With the paint, I build layers of colour which creates texture on the mug and adds to their vibrancy. The paints are ceramic and once dry are baked in the oven to cure the paint which makes them dishwasher proof. The mugs we are using are beautifully thin bone china, just right for a lovely cup of tea or coffee. These cockerels are all on our small Balmoral stock which gives you a small tea mug or coffee mug and is also perfect for a childrens mug. To see more information and compare sizes link here.
About the cockerels, I paint
I photograph chickens whenever I can. I am constantly looking for striking ones, either in character or in colours. Elmley nature reserve is a favourite for chickens as they are truly free range. Staying overnight at Elmley gives the opportunity to photograph these early in the morning or at the end of the day when the light is better and although this can be a challenge for painting it brings out the colours. I love the posturing, posing strutting that cockerels do and if you sit long enough some of that will happen.
All small Balmoral’s except the harvest mice have a back and a front. Generally, I put a full frontal, the head or the whole cockerel on the front side and a “bum” on the back. The interestingly I love the “bums” as much as the fronts
Customise your mug
Customise your cockerel with a message, a name, a date of birth in all of one of 4 places. Either side of the handle, between the pictures or on the bottom of the mug. You will be given the option at checkout to add personalised messages. The messages are handwritten on to the mugs and you can choose capitals, mixed case or lower case. We will ask you to supply the spelling by email to ensure we don’t make any errors. See examples here
Care for your mug
The painted mugs have a texture created by the build-up of the paint. They are dishwasher safe and fade safe. Do not use abrasive cloths or scourers on the painting and it can damage or remove the paint.
